Oh my Gawd..I was actually out this weekend, a very rare occurrence for me these days on account of lazyitis and homebody syndrome. I was invited to my friend Maya's birthday party in Edinburgh where I knew I'd see a few familiar faces I had been neglecting for far too long so I got myself some 'get up and go' and got up and went. The 40 minute train journey is always amazing, travelling over the Forth Rail Bridge..one of Scotland engineering landmarks.
I arrived in the city to be met by one of my oldest friends (shes not old but our friendship is, having attended the same primary and secondary schools..danced together to Five Star in the 80's and Morrissey in the 90's). Joanna is expecting in March and I have never seen anyone quite so laid back about the whole pregnancy/labour/baby rearing experience especially as its her first!
We went back to her new house which is a very practical terraced house perfect for a little family. After much catching up and a scrumptious dinner of beef stew cooked by her lovely hubby Hugh, we set out to make the birthday girl a cake. Needless to say it was a joint effort with Nigella Lawson supplying the recipe, Jo doing a lot of mixing, I did the icing and Hugh decorated the gigantic chocolate monster cake very artistically with pieces of Belgian Chocolate (even Nigella herself would have been in awe).
When we eventually got to the party (luckily without any comedy cake mishaps!) it was in full swing and great to see old pals again. Maya looked fantastic and I think it was fair to say a good night was had by all.
The next day was my mums birthday so I was summoned to my brothers flat in the city early to travel back to the homeland laden with gifts and flowers for yet another birthday girl (51..okay so not so much of a girl but she'll smack me if I write 'old woman'...oops). We went out for a nice lunch and then headed home leaving mum eyeing up her newly received boxes of Ferraro Rocher.
East, West..home is best..back to my beloved man and mutt. I'd been away a mere 24 hours but homebody syndrome was back..and welcomed!
